What is an IBCLC?

Lactation Consultants who carry the credentials, IBCLC, behind their names are specially trained and qualified to assist with every aspect of breastfeeding. The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) represents the "gold standard" in lactation consultant credentialing. Look for this credential when seeking the assistance of a lactation consultant in order to ensure the highest level of training, experience, and expertise.

What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a nutritionist?

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. RDNs use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make unique, positive lifestyle changes. All Registered Dietitians must:
·         Earn a bachelor’s degree with course work approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
·         Complete extensive supervised practice experiences at one or more health-care facilities, community agencies or foodservice corporations.
·         Pass the national Registered Dietitian (RD) examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
·         Complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.
In contrast to the Registered Dietitian credential, those designating themselves as a “nutritionist” may or may not have any education or training in nutrition. Some states have licensure laws that define the range of practice for someone using the designation “nutritionist,” but in other states, virtually anyone can call him- or herself a “nutritionist”.
